Designing Type
a) Start with basic strokes
I started the learning of calligraphy by starting with basic strokes. Each glyph/letter is made using four kinds of strokes:
- Verticals
- Horizontals
- Obliques
- Curves
The understanding of how each of these strokes is done helps me understand how the entire letterform will be constructed.
b) Finding letterforms
Britt gave me a sheet with an abstract figure and asked me to sketch however many letters I could see in it. The intent of the exercise was to:
1) understand that sketching is a lot more helpful and faster to capture the "essence and characteristics of the glyph"
2) understand the similarities and dissimilarities between the letterforms.
c) Worksheets provided by Britt
To help me understand how each letterform is constructed, Britt gave me worksheets of 'Humanistic Minuscule' along with sheets of Italics.
These acted as the ultimate guideline when I started practicing calligraphy on my own, on the grid sheet.
d) Starting Calligraphy
Once the process was clear, I start practicing calligraphy. These are some of the outputs from the same. The sheets were made by Britt to help me understand the guidelines.
1. Calligraphy
Before starting the process of Type Design, it was crucial for me to start with basic calligraphy. This was to understand how each letterform is constructed and thus become more sensitive to type.
